Trends: Email out of vogue with youth?

E-Mail is for Old People
As students ignore their campus accounts, colleges try new ways of communicating
By DAN CARNEVALE
From the Chronicle of Higher Education issue dated October 6, 2006

Excerpt: College officials around the country find that a growing number of students are missing important messages about deadlines, class cancellations, and events sent to them by e-mail because, well, the messages are sent to them by e-mail.
In response, some institutions require that students check their college e-mail accounts so they do not miss announcements, holding students responsible for official information that comes through that medium. Other institutions are attempting to figure out what technology students are using to try to reach them there.

File Sharing and the Music Biz

Does file-sharing hurt the music biz?
From Ars Technica
9/26/2006 12:44:05 PM, by Nate Anderson

Excerpt: Will file-sharing be the savior or the slayer of the music industry? The industry is quite sure that it knows the answer, and it has been attempting to sue the file-sharing genie back into its bottle, with limited success. Defenders of sharing argue that it actually benefits the music industry by exposing people to more artists. But for a topic this controversial, file-sharing has received limited academic scrutiny. The entire debate is in need of some good empirical evidence, which is why Norbert Michel's recent paper in Topics in Economic Analysis & Policy is so intriguing.

Yahoo plus Facebook?

Yahoo Woos a Social Networking Site
By SAUL HANSELL, New York Times
Published: September 22, 2006

Excerpt: Mark Zuckerberg is a member of the Google generation, one too young to remember all the ambitions dashed and fortunes lost when the last dot-com boom ended.
Online Socializers That may be one reason Mr. Zuckerberg, the 22-year-old founder of Facebook, a social networking Web site, has so far shied away from selling his company, rejecting offers that would have made him several hundred million dollars.
...When Viacom offered $750 million for Facebook in January, he asked for $2 billion and was rebuffed, according to a person involved in the negotiations. Now, he remains undecided about the latest offer, made in the last few weeks by Yahoo.

Academic - CNN story on Blackboard Patent

Who invented e-learning computing?
CNN.com POSTED: 10:36 a.m. EDT, August 29, 2006

Excerpt: "The patent, awarded to the Washington, D.C.-based company in January but announced last month, has prompted an angry backlash from the academic computing community, which is fighting back in techie fashion -- through online petitions and in a sprawling Wikipedia entry that helps make its case.

Critics say the patent claims nothing less than Blackboard's ownership of the very idea of e-learning. If allowed to stand, they say, it could quash the cooperation between academia and the private sector that has characterized e-learning for years and explains why virtual classrooms are so much better than they used to be."

Convergence: The Long Tail

By Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine:
"I wrote The Long Tail, which first appeared in Wired in October 2004 and then became a book, published by Hyperion on July 11, 2006."

The Long Tail, in a nutshell

"The theory of the Long Tail is that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail. As the costs of production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one-size-fits-all containers. In an era without the constraints of physical shelf space and other bottlenecks of distribution, narrowly-target goods and services can be as economically attractive as mainstream fare."

Blogs: State of the Blogosphere Aug 2006

50 Million Blogs and Counting.

From Sifry's Alerts - (David Sifry's - founder and CEO of Technorati - musings):
"On July 31, 2006, Technorati tracked its 50 millionth blog. The blogosphere that Technorati tracks continues to show significant growth.
...
Technorati has been tracking the blogosphere, or world of weblogs, since November 2002, and I'm constantly amazed at the growth over the years. The blogosphere has been doubling in size every 6 months or so. It is over 100 times bigger than it was just 3 years ago.

Whenever I write about these statistics, I'm always asked by people, "Can it continue to grow this quickly?" Frankly, I can't possibly imagine it continuing to grow at this pace - after all, there are only so many human beings in the world! It has to slow down."

mySpace: Murdoch Interview

Rupert Murdoch surprised by MySpace growth
By Diane Mermigas, Reuters, Tuesday, July 25, 2006; 5:58 AM

Excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter interview:
"THR: WHERE DO YOU ENVISION TAKING MYSPACE IN THE U.S. OVER THE NEXT YEAR?
Murdoch: We would have to keep making it a better experience, whether it was instant messaging or voice or what. We're looking at all the alternatives to make it stickier. There are crazy proponents who contend that it is just a young person's craze and it will all go away. We're having to see that it doesn't. We have to find ways, without destroying its character, of getting more advertising revenue."

Blackboard Sues Rival Provider of Course-Management Software, Alleging Patent Infringement
By DAN CARNEVALE, Washington

Blackboard Inc. has sued a rival in the business of e-learning software, Desire2Learn Inc., accusing it of infringing a patent recently awarded to Blackboard.

Blackboard is seeking an undisclosed amount of damages and royalty payments. But some education observers fear that Blackboard's patent may be so broad that it could stifle competition.
